On December 4th, 2024, Mr. Phatsakorn Bunyalak, the Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), reported severe flooding in southern Thailand caused by heavy rainfall from a new high-pressure system from China.
The disaster has affected 10 provinces since November 22nd, impacting 664,173 households across 87 districts and claiming 29 lives.
Currently, flooding persists in five provinces:
- Nakhon Si Thammarat: 7 districts affected, 48,331 households impacted, 1 fatality. Water levels in Khlong Tha Dee are decreasing.
- Phatthalung: 5 districts affected, 3,707 households impacted, 2 fatalities. Levels in the Songkhla Lake basin are receding.
- Songkhla: 4 districts affected, 23,643 households impacted, 10 fatalities. Water levels in the Songkhla Lake basin are lowering.
- Pattani: 7 districts affected, 65,769 households impacted, 7 fatalities. The Pattani River is receding.
- Narathiwat: 3 districts affected, 14,444 households impacted. The Sai Buri River’s water level is decreasing.
The DDPM deployed emergency teams with water pumps, evacuation vehicles, drinking water production units, flat-bottom boats, and helicopters to assist affected communities.
Local agencies were instructed to expedite relief efforts, assess damages, and ensure aid distribution following government regulations. The DDPM continues monitoring the situation closely, working to alleviate the hardship flood-affected residents face.
