Pattaya —
Pattaya police swiftly captured a gold theft suspect within 24 hours after he stole a gold ring to pay for gambling and illegal drugs.
The incident occurred on the evening of December 1st, 2024, at a jewelry store in South Pattaya. The suspect entered the store pretending to buy gold rings and, after selecting a one-baht-weight ring, brazenly told the staff, “I’m leaving now,” before fleeing the store.
To evade capture, he removed his jacket to change his appearance and escaped on a motorbike. Police launched a manhunt and quickly located him on the street. However, the suspect abandoned his motorbike and fled into nearby woods, prompting an hours-long search.
By 10:06 PM on December 2nd, Pattaya police eventually arrested the suspect, identified only as Mr. Boon, in Soi Land Department 2. Investigators tracked him using surveillance footage, which showed him renting a daily rental room in the Khao Mai Kaeow area.
During questioning, Mr. Boon reportedly confessed to the theft, claiming that he used to be a hotel security guard but was fired from his job. Left penniless, he decided to rob the jewelry store because it was guarded by only a few women.
After stealing the ring, Mr. Boon sold it at another store and used the money to buy drugs, gamble online, and purchase a new phone for his girlfriend. Pol. Col. Nawin Thirawit, Superintendent of Pattaya Police Station, advised Mr. Boon to reflect on his actions, accept his punishment, and start a new life after serving his sentence.
