On November 27th, 2024, Mr. Sanphet Bunyamanee, the MP from Songkhla, called on the government to expedite assistance for southern residents facing severe flooding.
While the Interior Minister previously stated that central assistance was unnecessary as the floods were seasonal and expected to recede quickly, reports from affected provinces suggest otherwise.
Sanphet pointed out that Songkhla, Yala, and other southern areas are experiencing record-high rainfall, exacerbated by rising sea levels. Many residents have been displaced, homes destroyed, and roads rendered impassable, underscoring the serious impacts of climate change.
Furthermore, Sanphet urged the government to mobilize resources and respond promptly rather than waiting for the situation to worsen. He emphasized equitable assistance across all regions and proposed long-term flood prevention strategies, including improved water management and addressing root causes.
“We cannot afford a repeat of the northern floods, where early assurances of control turned into widespread devastation. The government must act decisively to protect lives and property,” he warned.
Anutin Charnvirakul, the Thai Minister of the Interior, is set to village the region this weekend.
