Police Detain Over 50 Illegal Foreign Workers in Pattaya Ahead of Fireworks Festival

Pattaya —

Over 50 illegal foreign workers were detained in Pattaya as police cracked down on illegal workers ahead of the upcoming Pattaya International Fireworks Festival 2024 tomorrow.

The massive operation took place at 5 AM on November 28th, led by Pol. Maj. Gen. Thawatchakiat Jindakornsanoong, Chonburi Provincial Police Commander. Over 100 officers from various departments, including the Chonburi Provincial Investigation Unit, Pattaya Police Investigation Team, and Chonburi Immigration Office, raided multiple locations across the city to arrest foreigners working without permits or engaging in jobs reserved for Thai nationals only.

The first raid occurred at Rattanakorn Thepprasit Market, where a significant number of foreign workers were found. While some had valid work permits, many could only present their passports without any work authorization.

The workers typically sold flowers, food, and fruits. Among them were also Lao nationals who sold lottery tickets. They informed officers that they were hired by Thai employers to sell Thai government lottery tickets for7,000 baht if all tickets were sold. Some also told authorities that they were unafraid as their “boss” would help them return home.

In total, over 50 foreign workers were arrested, including those found in other areas across Pattaya. All detainees were taken to Pattaya Police Station for investigation and will subsequently face deportation.
