Sarawut Petchapanomporn from the ruling Pheu Thai Party won the critical Udon Thani PAO election, defeating Kanisorn Khurirang of the main opposition People’s Party in a landslide victory.
On November 25th, the Election Commission (EC) and the Udon Thani Provincial Administrative Organization reported the unofficial results of the Udon Thani Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO) chairman election. The results are as follows:
- Kanisorn Khurirang, Candidate No. 1 from the People’s Party, received a total of 268,675 votes.
- Sarawut Petchapanomporn, Candidate No. 2 from the Pheu Thai Party, secured 327,487 votes.
- Dhanut Tantheodthit, Candidate No. 3 running as an independent, received 17,224 votes.
Compared to the previous PAO chairman election in 2020, where Pheu Thai’s candidate Wichian Khaokham won with 325,933 votes, this year’s candidate Sarawut received an additional 1,554 votes.
Meanwhile, in 2020, the Progressive Movement’s candidate, Thanawat Thanathanaphit, received 185,801 votes. This year, Kanisorn, running under the People’s Party, which shares ties with the Progressive Movement, saw a significant increase of 82,874 votes.
Thaksin Shinawatra, father of Pheu Thai leader and Thailand’s current Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, personally campaigned for Sarawut in Udon Thani on November 13th and 14th. He stated that anything less than a landslide victory would prompt him to cover his face out of embarrassment.
The victory is seen as a major endorsement of Thaksin’s continued popularity in Northern and Northeastern Thailand.
