Koh Phangan —
On November 15th, 2024, Thai authorities responded to a warning from Israel’s Mossad about possible threats to Israeli tourists attending the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan, a popular destination for international visitors.
The Office of National Security in Israel reportedly issued an alert advising Israeli travelers to avoid visible symbols of their nationality and crowded spots across Thailand. In response, Thai officials significantly strengthened security on Koh Phangan and neighboring Koh Samui, focusing on safeguarding tourists during both the Full Moon Party and the Loy Krathong festival.
Koh Phangan District Chief Noppadol Khaomali addressed public concerns, confirming that the rumor of a planned attack on Israeli tourists was unsubstantiated. However, he explained that additional police, immigration officers, and local security teams have been mobilized to protect attendees and ensure their safety.
This includes increased monitoring at event venues, additional security checks at the island’s piers, and routine patrols to identify any suspicious activity.
On Koh Samui, immigration police, along with the tourist police, established checkpoints at ferry terminals to monitor incoming visitors, most of whom are expected to travel to Koh Phangan for the party.
Koh Phangan Police Chief Pol. Col. Panya Nirattimanon led a team from the special operations unit to set up inspection points along the main routes to Haad Rin, the Full Moon Party beach.
Officers are conducting thorough searches of vehicles, monitoring crowds, and maintaining a visible presence throughout the island. Late into the evening, teams continued patrolling Haad Rin Beach, where tourists were seen enjoying the festivities calmly and without disruption.
Ratchaporn Poolsawat, president of the Koh Samui Tourism Association, noted that while the season is typically quieter, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan have seen a surge in tourist numbers nearing peak season.
He emphasized the importance of balanced security, ensuring safety without causing undue alarm. Poolsawat urged travelers to remain calm, assuring them that no credible intelligence suggests an immediate threat and Thai authorities are taking preventive measures to protect all visitors.
