Stolen Gold Necklace Returned in Pattaya After Suspect Claims Misunderstanding

Pattaya —

A Thai woman in Pattaya was shocked to discover her gold necklace had been stolen after she accidentally left it behind, only for the man who took it to return hours later, claiming it was a misunderstanding.

27-year-old Ms. Bussarin, a curry rice vendor, told The Pattaya News reporters that she accidentally left behind a gold necklace she had just purchased from a jewelry shop in Soi Siam Country Club. After paying for the item, she walked out of the store without retrieving the necklace.

Ten minutes later, Ms. Bussarin realized her mistake and rushed back to the store, only to find the necklace was gone. The store quickly checked the security footage and identified a man, suspected to be Cambodian, who had stolen the necklace and put it in his pocket before casually walking out of the store.

About four hours later on the same day, November 7th, the jewelry store received a phone call from the man who took the necklace. He claimed he had mistakenly taken the necklace because he thought it was a “free gift” from the store. The man then returned the necklace to the store and was later identified only as Mr. Thone, a 24-year-old Lao national.

He explained that after purchasing a gold necklace from the store, he had mistakenly thought the empty bag next to him contained a free gift. He grabbed it, unaware that it was the gold necklace, and put it in his pocket without the intention of stealing it.

Mr. Thone further explained that after returning to his accommodation, he was shocked to see his face being shared widely on social media. Panicking, he checked the bag, which he had thought contained a gift, only to find the gold necklace. He then consulted his girlfriend and returned the necklace to the store, insisting it had been a misunderstanding and that he never intended to steal anything.

Ms. Bussarin quickly went to the jewelry store and spoke with Mr. Thone. She was moved to tears when she received her necklace back but remained skeptical of the man’s explanation. She thanked the netizens for sharing the information on social media, which helped her get her necklace back.

Mr. Thone is not being charged at this time.
