An Indian tourist in Pattaya claimed he had lost over 20,000 baht after falling victim to an alleged scam involving overpriced herbal products sold by foreign touts.
At 11:36 PM on November 6th, 34-year-old Indian national, Mr. Mayur, filed a complaint with Pattaya police, after realizing that he had fallen victim to an alleged scam by two Pakistani nationals.
Mr. Mayur explained to police that the individuals had approached him and offered to sell herbal products mixed with honey. They allegedly made exaggerated claims about their benefits and charged over 20,000 baht for the products. The alleged scam took place at a herbal shop on Pattaya Second Road. After realizing he had been deceived, Mr. Mayur filed the complaint to pursue legal action.
The name of the shop has been withheld by police pending ongoing investigations.
Mr. Mayur, who hopes to warn other tourists about this alleged scam, further explained that the reason the two Pakistani nationals approached him was because they noticed birthmarks on his hands and claimed to know of a shop selling a miracle herbal remedy guaranteed to cure such marks within two weeks.
They took him to the shop and recommended a product priced at 900 baht per gram, with honey, costing 1,000 baht per bottle. However, Mr. Mayur refused, saying he didn’t have enough money, but the shop insisted that the product, once mixed, could not be returned and pressured him into paying them 20,000 baht.
Later, while dining at a nearby restaurant, another foreign tourist noticed the packaging that Mr. Mayur received from the shop and warned him that he had likely been scammed. The tourist explained that similar scams involving Pakistani touts had deceived many tourists in Pattaya. Realizing the situation, Mr. Mayur quickly went to the police to file his complaint.
Pattaya police are sending the investigation team to inspect the shop and gather evidence for further legal action.
Reports also suggest that despite multiple crackdowns by Pattaya police and Chonburi health officials, the scam operation, which involves selling illegal herbal products at inflated prices, continues to prey on tourists in Pattaya, damaging the city’s reputation.
