Bangkok —
At 11:30 PM on November 5th, 2024, Wang Thonglang police, in coordination with Metropolitan Police Bureau investigators, raided an illegal gambling den operated by Chinese nationals in Wang Thonglang District, Bangkok.
The raid took place in a building on Soi Sahakarn Pramoon, which had previously been a Chinese restaurant but had closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The location had been converted into a makeshift gambling venue. A total of 20 Chinese, Taiwanese, and Thai nationals were arrested, including eight active gamblers, according to the police.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the group organized these gambling sessions through social media and other communication platforms, frequently moving locations to avoid detection, a tactic known as “running casinos.”
Police found poker games in progress during the raid. The suspects reportedly admitted to the charges and confessed that they had been organizing and participating in illegal gambling activities.
The authorities charged the group with operating an unauthorized gambling den and gambling for money without official permission.
The building was noted to still display signage from its former life as a restaurant, though it no longer served that purpose. Officials are continuing their investigations to track down other members of the group and monitor similar activities in the area.
