Airports of Thailand Set to Launch Biometric Check-Ins, Facial Recognition from November 2024

National —

On October 28th, 2024, Mr. Kirati Kitmanawat, the Airports of Thailand Deputy Director, announced the upcoming implementation of an Automated Biometric Identification System, enhancing passenger experience with facial recognition across six major airports.

This new system, set to launch on November 1st for domestic passengers and December 1st for international travelers, allows passengers to register at check-in counters or self-service kiosks by scanning their passports or ID cards and facial features, minimizing the need for boarding passes and passports throughout their journey.

The system aims to speed up passenger flow, reducing wait times and facilitating smooth check-ins, baggage handling, and boarding.
The new biometric system is expected to be particularly beneficial for the high volume of travelers during the upcoming holiday season, allowing passengers more time to shop, dine, and relax within airport terminals.
The Airports of Thailand (AoT) reported significant growth, with a 19.2% increase in passenger traffic in the fiscal year 2024, totaling over 119 million passengers across its six airports, including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang, Phuket, and Hat Yai.

International traffic grew by 34.8%, with Chinese travelers leading among the top five nationalities, followed by Indian, South Korean, Russian, and Japanese nationals.
The winter flight schedule for 2024/2025 projects a 22.1% increase in flights, reflecting strong travel demand, especially from China, Malaysia, India, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
