Bangkok authorities found two entertainment venues on Khao San Road illegally selling nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, during a crackdown on Saturday night, October 26th.
On October 27th, Dr. Veerachai Nalwachai, Deputy Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), revealed that on October 26th at around 12:30 AM, FDA officials and police officers from the Phlapphla Chai 2 and Chana Songkhram Police Stations inspected two entertainment venues on Khao San Road. They then discovered two nightclubs selling laughing gas contained in balloons.
The first venue was identified by relevant authorities as “Best Friend”. Here, authorities found 36 boxes of nitrous oxide, 100 used silver canisters, 8 gas cylinders, 1,500 mixed-sized balloons, and two signs advertising the sale of laughing gas balloons.
At the second venue, identified as “Boozy,” relevant authorities found 58 boxes of nitrous oxide, 105 used silver canisters, 3 gas cylinders, and two bags of mixed-sized balloons.
Dr. Veerachai stated that these entertainment venues violated the Drug Act of 1967, which carries a penalty of up to 5 years in prison and a fine of no more than 10,000 baht. Additionally, selling unregistered drugs can result in an additional up to 3 years in prison, a fine of up to 5,000 baht, or both.
He further warned that using nitrous oxide for recreational use can cause nausea, vomiting, unconsciousness, and even death. He urged the public to report any incidents of laughing gas sales to the FDA hotline at 1556, via Line: @FDAThai, Facebook: FDAThai, email at 1556@fda.moph.go.th, or through P.O. Box 1556, Ministry of Public Health, Nonthaburi 11004. Reports can also be made to local provincial public health offices nationwide.
