Bangkok Taxi Driver Arrested for Assaulting Australian Tourist

Bangkok —

On October 24th, 2024, Thung Maha Mek police officers questioned a taxi driver after an incident involving the stabbing of an Australian tourist in Bangkok’s Sathorn area.

The altercation occurred early on October 23rd around 3:39 AM in Narathiwat Soi 9, where police found the 39-year-old Australian man (whose name was withheld by the police) injured with a stab wound to his right abdomen. Rescue teams provided first aid before transporting the victim to Chulalongkorn Hospital.

According to preliminary investigations, the tourist had taken a pink taxi, but a dispute arose, leading to an assault with a small cutter knife. A passerby intervened, causing the driver to flee the scene.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage, police identified the taxi driver only as Mr. Samorn, 49, who admitted to the attack. He claimed that a conflict between the tourist and another Thai passenger escalated, and after the tourist aggressively exited the vehicle and allegedly hit the taxi, he demanded the transportation fare.

A heated exchange ensued, during which the taxi driver waved a cutter knife, saying he accidentally wounded the Australian tourist before driving away and dropping the Thai passenger on Silom road, according to the police.

The taxi driver now faces charges of assault causing bodily harm and has apologized to the tourist for the incident. It’s unclear if the tourist has accepted the apology.
