Chinese Tourist Sparks Outrage for Using Slingshot to Allegedly Shoot at Animals in Khao Kheow Zoo

Chonburi —

A TikTok video showing a Chinese tourist using a slingshot to seemingly shoot at animals in Khao Kheow Open Zoo near Pattaya has sparked outrage on Thai social media.

The viral video was posted on TikTok by user @patcharida_36, showing a female Chinese tourist, believed to be part of a Chinese tour group, using a slingshot to shoot at unknown targets in the Khao Kheow Open Zoo.

Numerous Thai internet users were angry with the tourist’s behavior and questioned where the zoo staff were during the incident.

The video, which has received millions of views, includes a caption that reads, “This is not good at all.” It also shows the female tourist shooting not just once but multiple times with her slingshot. She also appeared happy and smiled after each shot, which upset many nearby visitors in the area.

After the video became viral, Mr. Narongwit Chotchoi, the director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, stated that he has seen the video. However, he said the clip does not clearly show what was being shot, although later reports claim they were wild monkeys. The zoo is currently investigating the matter and will proceed with the following steps:

  1. Sending a formal legal letter to the tour company responsible for the tourist to inform them of the incident.
  2. Filing a police report after receiving the original video footage.
  3. Urging tourists who witness similar incidents to immediately report it to the zoo staff so they can address the situation on the spot.

As of press time, legal action was likely to be taken against the tourist and tour group and possibly tour company. The zoo also noted the incident did not happen around or involve the zoo’s most popular and viral attraction, global superstar baby pygmy hippo Moo Deng.
