Buddhists in Takhian Tia Continue Post Buddhist Lent Traditions

Takhian Tia, Near Pattaya-

Yesterday, October 18th, 2024, at Wat Nalikanaram (Wat Takhian Tia) in Banglamung, Buddhists in Takhian Tia gathered to continue the tradition of making merit and offering alms to monks following the end of Buddhist Lent. This event, observed for just one day, saw people from Takhian Tia and nearby areas bringing rice, fish, and food to participate in the merit-making ceremony.

The tradition of putting “Khao Tom Luk Yon” or “Khao Tom Hang,” passed down since ancient times, was also upheld. The event drew large numbers of local politicians and generous Buddhists.

“Khao Tom Luk Yon” or “Khao Tom Hang,” a smaller version of Khao Tom Mat, is uniquely wrapped with a long tail for ease of offering alms. Made from sticky rice fried with coconut milk, it is filled with black beans and bananas, then wrapped in a cone using pandan or coconut leaves, tied with bamboo strips, and steamed. Traditionally made on the last day of Buddhist Lent, this practice has been passed down through generations in Takhian Tia and Chonburi Province.

Today, on the 1st day of the waning moon of the 11th month, October 18th, 2024, the community observed “Tak Bat Thevo” or “Thevo Rohana” to commemorate the day Lord Buddha descended from heaven after preaching the Abhidhamma to his mother for three months. Known as “Tak Bat Daowadung,” the customary alms given include Khao Tom Mat, Khao Tom Hang, and Khao Tom Luk Yon.
