TAT Launches New Routes Highlighting Global Superstar Pygmy Hippo Moo Deng to Boost Domestic Tourism

National —

On October 15th, 2024, Mr. Nithi Siprae, the Deputy Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) revealed a new campaign to boost domestic tourism. The campaign leverages the popularity of Moo Deng, the pygmy hippo, which has become a hit among both Thai and international tourists.

TAT designed five travel routes across five regions, featuring Moo Deng in order to promote attractions along the way and encourage inter-regional tourism.

The campaign targets families and Generation Y and Z travelers, aged 21-37, particularly those visiting Chonburi and nearby areas. The increased interest was expected to boost hotel occupancy, restaurant spending, and attraction visits in Sriracha, Bangsaen, and Bang Phra by 5-10%.

Nithi noted that the campaign aligns with current trends of self-organized trips, where tourists plan their own routes, accommodations, and dining, contributing directly to local economies.

TAT will promote these routes through various channels, including print, online media, and social media, encouraging travelers to share their experiences.

The routes include:

  1. Northern Region: Singha Park, Chiang Rai; Chae Son National Park, Lampang; Dhanabadee Ceramic Museum, and Mae Wong National Park, Tak.
  2. Northeastern Region: Khon Kaen Zoo, Khon Kaen; Natural History Museum, Khon Kaen; Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo, Nakhon Ratchasima; and Khao Yai National Park.
  3. Central Region: Pa Nai Krung Learning Center, Bangkok; Bang Ko Bua Tourism Village, Samut Prakan; and Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital, Prachinburi.
  4. Southern Region: Rajjaprabha Dam, Surat Thani; Sirinat Rajini Mangrove Ecosystem Study Center, Prachuap Khiri Khan; and Sirindhorn International Environmental Park, Phetchaburi.
  5. Eastern Region: Ban Nam Chiao Community, Trat; Namtok Phlio National Park, Chanthaburi; and Space Inspirium, Chonburi.

Additionally, at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi, where Moo Deng resides, tourists can enjoy penguin parades, tiger and lion feeding, and the unique underwater elephant show, which remains a top attraction.
