Sattahip —
A group of Thai women was arrested in Sattahip for playing cards illegally after being misled by social media reports that they could gamble legally without needing permission.
On October 13th, Sattahip police received a tip from concerned citizens that a group of women were gambling by playing Pok Deng behind a local restaurant near the Bang Saray Night Market. Officers immediately responded to the report.
Upon arrival, authorities arrested four Thai unidentified women and seized evidence including a deck of Pok Deng cards, 240 baht in cash, and a cloth used for the game. The suspects were taken into custody and transported to Sattahip Police Station for further legal proceedings.
According to the police, the suspects had violated the Gambling Act of 1935 and were charged with “engaging in unauthorized gambling for financial gain.”
During questioning, the suspects stated that they had seen many social media reports claiming that playing cards was now legal in Thailand, and they could play it anywhere at anytime. They admitted they were unaware that they needed to obtain legal permission from relevant authorities first before playing.
TPN media notes that the exact regulations for allowing this legal permission are still vague but seem to require proper business licenses, locations, and partnership with district officials. Private games are NOT legalized.
Eleven people were arrested recently, mostly foreigners, for a private game of gambling as well.
