Lamphun Prepares for Potential Overflow from Chiang Mais Rising Floodwaters

North —

On October 6th, 2024, Chiang Mai Governor Nirat Pongsitthavorn issued an urgent notice regarding incoming floodwaters from Mueang Chiang Mai District, which are expected to impact Saraphi District and downstream areas.

The notice urges residents in flood-prone lowlands of Saraphi, Hang Dong, and San Pa Tong Districts to immediately evacuate bedridden patients and vulnerable groups to Chiang Mai’s flood evacuation centers or other safe locations within 24 hours.

Residents are also advised to move animals, belongings, and vehicles to higher ground.
Rescue teams from both government and private sectors have been actively evacuating vulnerable groups from high-risk areas. The public has been warned to secure items at elevated levels.

The Lamphun-Chiang Mai Disaster Monitoring Facebook page also alerted residents in Lamphun Province to brace for large volumes of water from Saraphi District.

Overflowing waters from the Ping River in Chiang Mai have already inundated homes, with floodwaters spreading unpredictably. The situation is expected to affect the U Mong Subdistrict in Lamphun.

Lamphun officials are preparing for potential floods and overflow from the Ping River as waters are expected to follow the railway route towards U Mong. If successfully managed, the water will be diverted into the Kuang River, reducing the risk of severe flooding in the city of Lamphun.
