Pattaya —
The “Moo Deng” craze has brought new life to Khao Kheow Open Zoo near Pattaya, with a sharp rise in bookings for accommodations, especially on holidays and weekends. The zoo is also seeing more interest from seminar and educational groups.
“Moo Deng,” a baby pygmy hippo and Khao Kheow Open Zoo’s current superstar, has gone viral around the world, inspiring lots of memes and even catching the attention of international media and a popular Saturday Night Live skit this weekend.
According to Mr. Narongwit Chodchoi, director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Moo Deng’s unstoppable fame has brought many new visitors to the zoo. People who had never been to the zoo before are now coming just to see Moo Deng.
Mr. Narongwit said: “On normal days before Moo Deng became popular, we typically see hundreds of visitors, while on holidays, that number increases to around 3,000 to 4,000.”
“Currently, we have about 6,000 to 7,000 visitors on weekdays, and over 10,000 on holidays and weekends. We’re also seeing more overnight stays, with our accommodations nearly full every day, especially on weekends.”
Mr. Narongwit further revealed that the “Khao Kheow Night Zoo” tour, which runs at 7 PM daily, is also fully booked every night. The zoo is also getting more interest from groups wanting to use the venue for seminars and educational reasons.
As for the news that the zoo is planning to offer nighttime viewings of Moo Deng,” the zoo director clarified that there are no such plans, as this would disturb her and other animals during their rest time. The current night zoo tours focuses on animals that are awake at night and nocturnal.
However, visitors can still enjoy watching the animals, including Moo Deng, via www.zoodio.live 24 hours a day.
