Chonburi Sub District Hosts Annual Buffalo Racing Event to Preserve Local Culture

Phanat Nikhom, Chonburi Province

On September 15th, 2024, the Narik Sub-district Administrative Organization held its annual buffalo racing tradition at the rice field of Kamnan Anucha in Village 6. The event was presided over by Mr. Witthaya Khunpluem, President of the Chonburi Provincial Administrative Organization.

This unique tradition aims to preserve the rich cultural heritage of Chonburi Province. The buffalo racing event is a longstanding tradition in the region, celebrated annually in various local areas. In Narik Subdistrict, where agriculture remains a vital part of daily life, buffaloes still play a crucial role in farming, providing essential power for rice cultivation.

The buffalo racing competition serves multiple purposes: it conserves and restores local wisdom about the agricultural way of life, promotes the conservation of Thai buffaloes, especially the running buffaloes, and prevents their extinction. Additionally, the event supports local occupations and showcases the art and cultural value of Thailand, while also promoting tourism.

The competition featured two main categories: the buffalo racing competition and the walking tractor racing competition. The event highlighted the importance of buffaloes in agriculture and also celebrated equipment used in farming.
