Khao Kheow Zoo Near Pattaya Warns Visitors After Harassment of Popular Baby Hippo Moo Deng

Chonburi —

The director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province has implemented new measures to protect “Moo Deng,” the zoo’s beloved viral pygmy hippopotamus who is the internet’s newest sensation and now going global, after she was allegedly harassed by visitors throwing shellfish and splashing water on her. The zoo warned that legal action would be taken against offenders.

The incident caused a stir among Moo Deng’s fans after netizens posted on Facebook that some people threw shellfish at the baby hippo while she was sleeping in an attempt to wake her up. Another tourist was seen pouring water on her, sparking heated criticism online. Fans said the behavior is extremely inappropriate, as it could injure the young animal.

Following the incident, Mr. Narongwit Chodchoi, Director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, said on September 12th, 2024, that visitors must respect the zoo etiquette by only visiting Moo Deng when she is awake and refraining from throwing objects at her. He also urged people not to shout or throw items at other animals and respect the rules of the zoo.

The director added that the zoo has installed more CCTV cameras and increased staff presence during busy hours. If any violations against the animals occur, the zoo will pursue legal action to the fullest extent. This comes as the zoo is experiencing thousands of more visitors due to the growing popularity of Moo Deng.

According to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo’s Facebook page, the best times to visit Moo Deng to see her awake are between 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM when she eats breakfast and 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, as she needs plenty of rest due to her young age. Visitors are asked not to disturb her while she is sleeping.
