Chiang Rai Floods Worsen as Waters Rise Overnight Due to Influx from Chiang Mai

Chiang Rai —

On September 12th, 2024, Thai national media reported that heavy flooding in Chiang Rai’s municipal areas worsened overnight, driven by large water masses flowing in from Chiang Mai.

On September 11th, rescue teams from various agencies rushed to assist residents overnight in flood-affected areas, especially as water levels rose rapidly, prompting many to evacuate.

Some residents reported wading through waist-deep water to reach work, stating this year’s flooding is the worst they have ever seen.

Chiang Rai’s Disaster Prevention Office reported that five sub-districts in Mueang Chiang Rai were affected, with three major bridges—Mae Fah Luang, Khua Phaya Mengrai, and Kok River Bridge—closed due to severe flooding.

While water levels have begun to recede in some areas like Mae Sai, many villagers remain stranded, with some reporting water as high as two meters and a shortage of food.
