Mukdahan —
On September 3rd, 2024, Mr. Adul Siriman, the Head of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation at Mukdahan Municipality, received complaints from teachers and parents of a local kindergarten regarding the strong odor of cannabis plants affecting the school’s operations.
The cannabis plants were reportedly being cultivated on a building directly in front of the school, causing not only a pervasive smell but also leaks from the cultivation site into the school premises.
Despite previous complaints to various authorities, the cannabis farm owner reportedly refused to relocate, claiming to have legal permission from the Mukdahan Provincial Public Health Office. Municipal officials inspected the site and confirmed the presence of cannabis plants being grown on the building’s rooftop and modified interior.
Adul reported that the strong odor of cannabis was evident from both the school’s entrance and the cultivation site, and it is expected to worsen as the plants mature. The situation has also led to other issues, such as the smell from fertilizers and chemicals used to boost cannabis flowering, and frequent power outages in the area due to the farm’s heavy use of air conditioning and misting systems.
The municipality will coordinate with relevant government agencies to address the complaints and urgently review the cannabis cultivation permit near the school.
