Pattaya —
A Pattaya city official allegedly slapped an intoxicated Thai woman during a confrontation, sparking public outrage.
A video clip currently going viral on Thai social media reportedly shows a confrontation between a Pattaya city official and a female that escalated to physical violence.
According to the footage, the official, a municipality worker, appeared to slap the woman in the face before attempting to force her into the back of a city pickup truck to be taken to the police station. The incident occurred at approximately 6:00 AM on August 27th, 2024, in front of a convenience store on Walking Street in South Pattaya.
On the evening of August 31st, The Pattaya News reporters visited the scene of the incident. An eyewitness, who requested not to be named, recounted the events, stating that an intoxicated woman had entered the convenience store and began arguing with the staff. When the situation escalated into shouting and nearly a physical altercation, the store contacted Pattaya City’s special operations officers, aka the municipality, to intervene.
A city patrol vehicle soon arrived, and the officers attempted to escort the woman into the vehicle. However, she resisted, leading to a confrontation between her and the officers. The eyewitness stated that they did not see the officer strike the woman, only that she was taken to Pattaya Police Station to calm down.
Meanwhile, The Pattaya News reporters spoke by phone with the woman seen in the video. The 34-year-old Ms. Da (real name withheld upon request) admitted that while she claimed she was not heavily intoxicated on the day of the incident and said had only had a few drinks, according to her, she did have an argument with the convenience store staff. The store then called Pattaya city officials to resolve the situation. She stated that she believed the shop escalated the situation, versus her.
When the city officials arrived, they attempted to put Ms. Da into the back of the city pickup truck. As she resisted and flailed her arms, one of the officers allegedly slapped her in the face, Ms. Da claimed. Following this, she decided to file a police report at Pattaya Police Station.
However, after filing the report, Ms. Da alleged that she was summoned by the investigating officer two days later for a discussion with the opposing official. The official did not show up, but the police informed her that she might also face charges for assaulting an officer while they were performing their duties, Ms. Da claimed.
Not wanting further trouble, Ms. Da decided to drop the charges. She also urged the authorities to refrain from using violence and to prevent such incidents from happening again.
