On August 31st, 2024, Acting Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, standing in for the Prime Minister, provided an update on the vetting process for the ministers in the “Paetongtarn 1” Cabinet.
This follows concerns raised by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) regarding certain candidates’ qualifications. Phumtham stated that it is difficult to determine the level of risk without detailed information, which is currently being reviewed by the Secretariat of the Cabinet and the Council of State. He expects the matter to be resolved swiftly.
Regarding the NACC’s role, Phumtham clarified that the commission sends documents listing any cases involving the prospective ministers, but does not pass judgment on their guilt or innocence. These documents will be reviewed by the relevant authorities.
Phumtham also mentioned that he could not specify which candidates are implicated as he has not seen the details yet. However, he assured that the process should be completed by September 15, with potential adjustments of a few days.
When asked if the new Cabinet list could be presented to His Royal Majesty the King for appointment next week, Phumtham responded that it depends on the completion of the vetting process, which they aim to expedite.
On the topic of the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, Phumtham confirmed it will be included in the government’s economic agenda and will be implemented as soon as the new government takes office.
Phumtham also commented on the list of ministers from the Democrat Party, stating that it is being handled according to the party’s process and should reach the Cabinet Secretariat soon.
When asked about concerns from the Democrat and Pheu Thai parties that might affect confidence in the new government, Phumtham emphasized that the public’s priority is for the government to start working immediately to address the country’s economic challenges. He urged all parties to work together with unity.
