At 11:00 PM on August 29th, 2024, Thai police arrested two suspects linked to the deadly “Ya Dong Cluster” incident in Min Buri, Bangkok, where six people died from consuming herb-infused Thai alcohol.
According to the police, investigations revealed that the herb-infused Thai alcohol, or Ya Dong sold at a shop in Min Buri, contained methanol and isopropyl alcohol, both highly dangerous when ingested.
The Thai Excise Department’s forensic tests confirmed these findings, prompting an intensive manhunt that led authorities to Wang Noi, Ayutthaya, where the suspects were hiding.
The suspects, publicly identified as Surachai Insam, 43, and Surasak Insam, 46, face serious charges, including attempted murder, intentional murder, and the illegal production and sale of alcohol.
Despite their arrest, the brothers denied involvement, claiming the alcohol they supplied was a 95% ethanol blend safe for human consumption. They also reportedly insisted they were unaware of any harmful actions taken by the shop owner, “Jae Pu,” to whom they sold their product.
The Department of Medical Services indicated that since August 22nd, there have been 43 cases linked to this incident. While 27 patients have recovered, six have died, and 10 remain hospitalized, with seven in critical condition on ventilators.
Thai authorities remain unconvinced by the suspects’ claims and continue their investigation. Both men have been handed over to the Min Buri police station for further legal proceedings.
