Nongprue, Thailand — August 27th, 2024-
In an effort to curb the growing dog population and provide care for neglected strays, the SOI DOG Foundation recently launched a free sterilization service in Nongprue Municipality. The foundation aims to reduce the number of stray dogs while ensuring that owned pets receive proper care.
Specialized Veterinarians Lead the Effort
At the Nongprue Municipality Health Park Dome, a team of specialized veterinarians is providing sterilization services for both male and female dogs. Owners can bring their pets to the facility, where the dogs are temporarily housed in cages before undergoing the sterilization procedure. Each day, the foundation sterilizes 40 dogs, equally divided between stray dogs and house pets.
A Humane Approach to Stray Population Control
Founded in 2003 in Phuket Province, the Soi Dog Foundation focuses on caring for neglected stray dogs and cats. With over 70,000 strays on the island, population growth remains a challenge due to a lack of awareness about sterilization. The foundation’s mission is to manage the stray population humanely and sustainably by providing essential medical care.
Funding and Impact
The foundation’s operations are funded by like-minded individuals who share their vision. Annually, Soi Dog sterilizes and vaccinates a significant number of stray dogs and cats across Thailand, including Phuket and Bangkok. To date, they have performed over one million sterilizations. Nongprue, an area adjacent to Pattaya, has seen a continuous increase in stray dog distribution.
The Path Forward
By choosing Nongprue as the site for this sterilization service, the foundation aims to reduce the stray dog population. Sterilization remains the most effective method for sustainable and humane population control. When over 80% of the stray animal population is sterilized, the number of street animals naturally decreases, gradually solving the stray animal problem.
