On August 25th, 2024, Thai national media reported that an anonymous individual filed a complaint on August 19th, 2024, with the Election Commission (EC), urging them to petition the Constitutional Court to dissolve the Pheu Thai Party.
The complainant cited a previous ruling by the Constitutional Court as evidence that the party allowed non-members to influence its activities, a violation of the Constitution and relevant organic laws.
The complaint referred to the Constitutional Court’s ruling, which found that former PM Srettha Thavisin, the first respondent, exhibited behavior that seriously breached ethical standards under Section 160(5) of the Constitution.
It was alleged that Srettha met with an unnamed “individual,” following which he proposed Pichit Chuenban, the second respondent and his personal lawyer, for a ministerial position despite previously withdrawing Pichit’s name from consideration, according to Thai national media.
The complainant argued that this conduct demonstrated Srettha’s lack of integrity and his willingness to allow others, specifically former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, to misuse the Prime Minister’s authority to influence the Pheu Thai Party’s political appointments.
