The Tourist Police Bureau, as the primary agency responsible for the safety of both Thai and foreign tourists, has been actively suppressing illegal activities that harm the tourism sector. The recent crackdown targeted illegal tour operators, a significant source of damage to the industry.
Led by Pol. Col. Songwut Chueaplakit, Chief of Investigation, and Pol. Lt. Col. Piyapong Raksa, Deputy Chief of Investigation, the team focused on identifying and apprehending individuals running unauthorized tour businesses and foreigners working illegally as tour guides. Their efforts align with the Tourist Business and Guide Act B.E. 2551 and its amendments.
On August 22nd, 2024, at approximately 12:30 p.m., the Investigation Division (Region 2) conducted an inspection at the 4 Regions Floating Market in Nong Prue Subdistrict, Banglamung District, Chonburi Province. They discovered a gray HONDA CRV with Bangkok license plates, driven by a Chinese national, Mr. HAO (surname withheld), who was guiding three foreign tourists.
Mr. HAO, 41, was found providing tour guide services, a profession reserved exclusively for Thai nationals in which work permits are not available. Upon inspection, police found receipts for entrance fees to various tourist attractions in his possession. Mr. HAO admitted to conducting the tour independently, charging 500 yuan per day for six days, totaling 3,000 yuan.
This operation highlights the Tourist Police Bureau’s ongoing efforts to enforce regulations and ensure the integrity of Thailand’s tourism industry. By cracking down on illegal tours, the Tourist Police Bureau aims to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all tourists visiting the country.
