Thailands Flood Crisis: 13 Fatalities in Phuket Landslide, DDPM Mobilizes Recovery Efforts

National —

On August 24th, 2024, Mr. Chaiwat Junthiraphong, the Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), provided an update on the flash floods and forest runoff affecting 11 provinces in northern and southern Thailand.

The flooding, driven by a moderate monsoon trough and low-pressure system over northern Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin, impacted 62 districts, affecting 30,807 households and resulting in 13 deaths and 19 injuries.

The most tragic incident occurred in Phuket, where heavy rains triggered both flooding and a landslide in Mueang District. The landslide struck a residential area, causing multiple fatalities.

Emergency responders worked tirelessly to recover the bodies and assist the injured. In total, 13 people lost their lives, and 19 others were injured. Rescue teams have since stabilized the situation, and efforts are underway to restore normalcy.

Currently, 7 provinces are still dealing with flood conditions, affecting 21,971 households. These include Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Phetchabun, Udon Thani, and Phuket. Water levels are receding, and the DDPM has coordinated with local authorities to deploy disaster response teams, water pumps, evacuation vehicles, and water production units to assist those impacted.

Efforts are focused on rapid water drainage, relief distribution, and restoring affected areas to normalcy as quickly as possible.

Residents in need of assistance can contact the DDPM through the “1784 Safety Hotline” and the “Thai Disaster Alert” app.
