On August 23rd, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, acting on behalf of the Prime Minister, oversaw relief efforts for those affected by severe flooding in northern Thailand.
Thai national media reported that the Office of the Prime Minister had already distributed 11,932 survival kits to assist flood victims.
Additionally, more aid packages are being sent to other provinces, with efforts focused on providing immediate relief. Local authorities are also assessing damage to property, homes, and agricultural areas to plan further assistance for affected residents.
From August 16-22, heavy rainfall caused flash floods, landslides, and mudslides across several northern provinces, impacting over 15,000 households in Nan, Chiang Rai, and Phayao. Many homes, farmlands, and public infrastructure suffered significant damage.
Prime-Minister Elect Paetongtarn Shinawatra is set to visit the area on Saturday, August 24th, but as the leader of the Pheu Thai party as she is not officially Prime Minister until her cabinet is finalized, likely in September.
