Pattaya —
Pattaya Mayor Mr. Poramase Ngampiches revealed plans to address the persistent flooding issues and reduce the water runoff from higher areas into Pattaya, saying the city is set to go ahead with a water diversion project to the Huai Yai water retention area, after delays caused by the high-speed rail project.
Mr. Poramase stated that the frequent flooding along the railway tracks during heavy rains in Pattaya and nearby areas has become a common sight in the media. Areas such as Khao Noi, Khao Talo, and South Pattaya Road are among those most affected.
Pattaya City is currently working on resolving the flooding issues in these areas. In other parts of the city, where flooding was previously a problem, significant improvements have been made. For example, areas like Naklua, behind Wat Nong Yai, and the inner parts of Pattaya no longer experience the severe flooding they once did, Mr. Poramase noted.
The mayor went on to say that the frequent flooding reported in the media is largely due to water runoff from higher areas in neighboring municipalities into Pattaya. This includes water from Khao Noi and Khao Talo flowing down to the railway tracks. To address this, Pattaya City has installed drainage pipes along the railway road to divert the water and manage the runoff.
The northern section of this project, which directs water to Naklua Canal, has been completed. However, the southern section, which involves laying drainage pipes to divert water to the Huai Yai water retention area, has been delayed due to complications with the high-speed rail project. Mr. Poramase expected that the project would move forward soon but did not provide a specific timeline for its completion.
Mr. Poramase also mentioned two ongoing projects to fix flooding in the southern part of Pattaya. The first project involves directing water from South Pattaya Sukhumvit Road to the Huai Yai retention area via pipes laid through Soi Sukhumvit 54. This project, once completed, will prevent water from Khao Noi, Khao Talo, and the railway road from entering the city. The second project is the construction of a water pumping station at Khao Talo to divert water to the Huai Yai Canal. The city is currently in the process of selecting a contractor for this project. Once both projects are completed, they are expected to significantly ease the issue of water runoff from higher areas into Pattaya, the mayor concluded.
