On August 14th, 2024, local vendors and residents in Buriram voiced growing concerns after the Thai Constitutional Court’s ruling to remove Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office.
A common worry among the community is the potential cancellation of the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, a key policy initiative aimed at boosting the economy from the Pheu Thai Party.
Many vendors and residents in the Buriram municipal market expressed fears that the digital wallet scheme, which was eagerly anticipated as a much-needed economic booster, may be scrapped if a new Prime Minister decides to change direction.
This concern is heightened by the already challenging economic conditions, with some fearing that a shift in policy could further destabilize the economy, particularly if it leads to a loss of confidence among foreign investors.
According to Buriram local media, residents also expressed frustration with the government under Srettha’s administration, feeling that it had not done enough to address economic issues or improve their quality of life. They noted that the focus seemed to be more on political disputes and personal moral standpoints like debating cannabis than on implementing tangible solutions to the economic hardships they face, such as rising living costs.
However, there is a cautious hope that new leadership might bring about positive change, with residents urging the incoming administration to prioritize economic recovery and address the pressing needs of the people more effectively, according to Buriram local media.
Additionally, many citizens from various provinces expressed their concerns over canceling the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme in a similar direction. They hoped for a new leader to stimulate the local economy with more serious measures.
