On August 15th, 2024, Mr. Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, the leader of the People’s Party, held a press conference alongside party members to clarify their stance following the Bhumjaithai Party’s announcement of support for any Pheu Thai candidate for Prime Minister.
Natthaphong reaffirmed the People’s Party’s commitment to its political principles and stated that they will not support Pheu Thai’s alleged candidate, Chaikasem Nitisiri, for the Prime Minister position.
TPN media notes that reports as of early afternoon on August 15th, 2024, however, which are unconfirmed, is that Pheu Thai may nominate Paetongtarn Shinwatra, daughter of former controversial PM Thaksin Shinawatra, instead. This will become clear during tomorrow’s Parliament vote and meeting scheduled at 10 AM in Bangkok.
Natthaphong emphasized that the People’s Party would continue to act as a key opposition force, pushing for constitutional reforms, including reviewing the powers of independent bodies and the process of party dissolution, to align with international standards. He also stressed the importance of restoring democratic processes and ensuring that the ultimate power rests with the people.
The People’s Party, although in opposition, is open to working with other parties on shared goals, such as amending the constitution. Natthaphong clarified that any collaboration would not currently extend to altering Section 112, which governs lèse-majesté laws, distinguishing it from other constitutional issues. Proposing to amend Lese Majeste laws caused the dissolution of Move Forward Party, the People’s Party predecessor, notes TPN media.
Meanwhile, Mr. Chulaphan Amornvivat, Acting Deputy Minister of Finance from Pheu Thai, addressed concerns about the future of the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme. He stated that while the plan is for the scheme to still move forward under the current administration, its future will depend on negotiations and the priorities of the new government.
Chulaphan reassured the public that the government’s digital services app “Thang Raj” remains secure and beneficial, regardless of the wallet scheme’s fate.
Chulaphan affirmed that the digital wallet scheme remains a flagship policy for Pheu Thai and will be part of discussions in forming the next government. However, the final decision will depend on the outcome of coalition negotiations.
