On August 8th, 2024, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin addressed the media regarding the Move Forward Party’s response following the Constitutional Court’s decision to dissolve the party and disqualify its 11 executive members from running for office for ten years.
Srettha expressed understanding and encouragement for the party’s determination to continue its political activities. He stated that he had consulted with security officials and found no cause for concern over potential incitement.
“I am confident that the MFP respects the court’s decision and will proceed in a lawful manner,” Srettha said.
When asked about the US State Department’s opposition to the Constitutional Court’s decision, the Prime Minister emphasized Thailand’s sovereignty. “We are an independent nation. Foreign opposition holds no significance. We have our own democratic processes,” he said, asserting that legal amendments would be handled through parliamentary procedures.
“I believe all Thais understand this. We will not tolerate external interference in our sovereignty. However, we should see these comments as suggestions. We live in a fragile world and must manage accordingly,” Srettha remarked.
Responding to concerns from the private sector about political uncertainty in August, Srettha acknowledged these worries but noted that one issue had been resolved on the previous day. He mentioned that the Thai Constitutional Court was set to deliberate on another matter regarding his case on appointing Mr. Pichit Chuenban as Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office on August 14th, and he would continue his duties as usual until then.
When asked to reassure the public about Thailand’s judicial process, the Prime Minister affirmed, “I believe everyone communicates well and understands their responsibilities. We have always respected the court’s decisions, and I have consistently stated this.”
