Rising Star in Thai Motorcycle Racing: Mike Wellers Journey from Street Rider to Championship Contender

Chonburi, ThailandIn the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when most activities had come to a halt, Mike re-discovered a renewed passion that would change his life. He purchased a 2008 Honda CBR1000RR and began practicing at the Bira Circuit Race Track, located just 30 minutes from Pattaya.

The Bira Circuit, open for riding on Saturday and Sunday mornings and all day on Mondays and Tuesdays, became Mike’s primary training ground.

Transitioning from street riding to the safer environment of the race track, Mike quickly realized his potential. Encouraged by peers who recognized his natural talent, he entered his first race at the end of 2022. He finished 4th in the Superbike 1000 class and clinched 1st place in the Honda Cup on his Honda CBR1000RR.

In 2023, Mike completed the entire racing season, securing 2nd place in the Pirelli Superbike Mag 1000cc Championship. As of mid-2024, he has already won the first two rounds of the Superbike 1000 races and achieved 1st and 3rd places in the Honda Cup races, representing Team Buvado Racing.

Currently leading the Pirelli Superbike 1000 Championship, Mike is preparing for the next round at Bira in November. He also has upcoming races at the Kaeng Krachen Circuit in Hua Hin this year. Looking ahead to 2025, Mike plans to compete in the Superbike Mag Championship at Bira and hopes to secure additional sponsorship to race at the Chang Circuit in Buriram. Also, Mike shall compete in rounds 3 and 4 of the R2M FIM National Championship at Thailand Circuit on the 31st of August.

A little about Mike’s past in his own words:

My father bought me my first bike when I was 6 years old then I started Trials Riding at age 12 riding In the British Championship with some very encouraging results to my credit including the Southern Centre Champion in 1990.
I dabbled in motocross for a couple of years winning races in local club races before switching to Road Racing, competing in the MRO British Powerbikes from 2003 to 2006 rarely seen off the podium, and finishing 3rd in the MRO 2005 Clubman Championship.
My road racing career ended in 2006 when financial difficulties struck and then I decided to leave the UK for good and explore Asia, settling down in Thailand. As a result, motorcycling was put on hold until recently when Covid hit.
It seems apparent that Weller can ride any motorcycle in any discipline and be competitive in a short period.

Mike’s journey from a street rider to a championship contender is a testament to his dedication and talent. As he continues to make strides in the racing world, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring racers everywhere.
