Nine Beach Umbrella Operators in Pattaya Suspended for Exploiting Tourists

Pattaya —

Pattaya City has suspended the operation of nine beach umbrella operators for conducting unfair practices against tourists during the recent extended holiday in Thailand.

Mr. Wuttisak Rermkijakarn, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya, revealed that this decision came after the city had received complaints from tourists about unfair practices by some umbrella vendors, especially during Thailand’s recent three-day holiday period.

Of the nine operators in question, eight are first-time offenders. They have been ordered to cease operations for two weeks, from July 30th to August 15th, 2024. One operator, a repeat offender, however, is facing a two-month suspension, from July 30th to October 1st, 2024.

Mr. Wuttisak said any operators found violating the city’s regulations a third time will face permanent revocation of their operating license.

Mr. Wuttisak stated that beach umbrellas are important to provide convenience to tourists. He urged all vendors to adhere to the city’s regulations, including a requirement to pay a city fee of only 750 baht per year. Vendors are also instructed to treat tourists well, as positive experiences will lead to a good first impression and better word-of-mouth promotion.

The deputy mayor added that Pattaya City has set guidelines for umbrella operations, which require vendors to take one day off per month. Additionally, during the low season, vendors will be required to take two day offs per month to restore the beach’s natural beauty.

Mr. Wuttisak suggested any complaints about unfair treatment by beach vendors can be reported to Call Center 1337 or via the Pattaya City Mayor’s direct Facebook page. Pattaya City will investigate all complaints and take appropriate action if violations are proven to be true.

The exact details on how the operators were exploiting tourists were not revealed to the public and media.
