Legal Corner: A Chat About Hit And Run Laws in Thailand

Today on behalf of our friends at Issan Lawyers we take a look at hit and run laws in Thailand.

In a bid to curb the rising incidents of hit-and-run accidents, Thai authorities have reiterated the penalties awaiting offenders. According to the latest enforcement measures, individuals involved in hit-and-run accidents could face imprisonment for up to three months and/or a fine ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 Baht.

The penalties are designed to reflect the gravity of the offense, especially in cases where injuries or fatalities are involved. Law enforcement officials emphasize that the severity of the punishment will depend on the specific circumstances of each incident. This move aims to enhance road safety and ensure accountability among drivers.

Authorities urge all motorists to adhere to traffic laws and exercise caution to prevent accidents. The public is also encouraged to report any hit-and-run incidents to the police to aid in swift justice.

Hit-and-run accidents are often driven by a mix of legal, psychological, and situational factors. Some of the most common causes include:

  1. Fear of Legal Consequences: Drivers may flee the scene to avoid arrest, fines, or imprisonment, especially if they are at fault or have prior offenses.
  2. Lack of Valid License or Insurance: Individuals without a valid driver’s license or insurance may panic and leave the scene to avoid further legal trouble. Visa issues for foreigners cause some to flee also.
  3. Panic and Confusion: The shock and stress of an accident can cause some drivers to act irrationally and flee the scene.
  4. Avoiding Financial Responsibility: Drivers may not want to face the financial burden of damages or increased insurance premiums.
  5. Criminal Activity: Those involved in other illegal activities, such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or on overstay, may flee to avoid additional charges.
