National —

On July 27th, 2024, UNESCO announced that Phu Phrabat Historical Park in Udon Thani Province has been designated a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Named “Phu Phrabat, a testimony to the Sīma stone tradition of the Dvaravati period,” this site becomes Thailand’s fifth cultural heritage site, following Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Ban Chiang, and Si Thep.

Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, the Thai Minister of Culture, highlighted that Phu Phrabat’s recognition is due to its outstanding universal value in preserving the authenticity of Dvaravati-era Sīma stone traditions and its continuous cultural significance over four centuries.

To celebrate, the Ministry of Culture announced free admission to Phu Phrabat Historical Park from July 28 to August 12, 2024.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin also expressed gratitude to the World Heritage Committee and related organizations, noting that Thailand now boasts eight World Heritage sites, including five cultural and three natural sites. He emphasized that Udon Thani is unique for having two World Heritage sites.

The Thai Prime Minister also expressed hope that visitors from around the world will travel to Thailand to visit Phu Phrabat, the latest addition to the country’s World Heritage sites.
