Pattaya —
Several police officers from the Pattaya Police Station set up a checkpoint to deter a group of mainly Midden Eastern foreigners who were causing disturbances by racing motorcycles around and honking loudly, creating a nuisance for local residents.
The operation took place at 4:50 AM on July 26th, 2024. Pattaya Police stationed themselves at the entrance and end of Soi Yensabai in South Pattaya, Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province, with the goal to deter foreigners from breaking Thai traffic rules and conducting disorderly behaviors.
Police found about 50 foreigners riding motorcycles on the soi, and upon spotting the police, some turned their bikes around and evaded arrest. Those who could not escape were inspected by the police, who found that most were riding rented motorcycles, with some having modified exhausts to create loud noises. As a result, more than 10 motorbikes were confiscated as the renters did not have proper licenses, insurance, or other documentation.
Pattaya Police said the vehicles will be held until the real owners present their documents to retrieve them and face fines under the Thai Traffic Act for renting to people without the proper credentials.
The local Pattaya News reporters inspecting the inspection reported that some of the foreigners attempted to bribe the officers with 2,000-3,000 baht to release their impounded motorcycles. However, the officers refused the bribes and advised them to return to their accommodations and contact the police station the following day to pay the full traffic fines as required by law.
This crackdown was carried out just a few days after another crackdown where police seized several motorbikes, which lacked proper documentation.
