A bizarre incident unfolded on Pattaya Beach early this morning when a foreign man, dressed in monk attire, was discovered sleeping on the beach.
Concerned locals and tourists alerted the Pattaya police after noticing the unidentified foreigner sleeping on Pattaya Beach around 03:40 AM today, July 17th, 2024. Police promptly responded to the scene and found the individual sleeping on a monk’s robe and wearing a white shirt over the monk’s clothing and white pants.
When questioned, the man was incoherent. Police searched the man’s monk shoulder bag and found nothing illegal. Officers then took him into custody for further investigation at the Pattaya Police Station.
Initially, no travel documents for entering Thailand or a certificate of ordination from any temple were found on the individual. Police are coordinating with an interpreter to assist in questioning the man to potentially press charges but it’s unclear where the man is from as of press time and he was still largely incoherent.
Mr. Preecha Intarasorn, a 46-year-old local resident, told The Pattaya News that he and other locals and tourists were sitting on the beach when they saw the foreign man dressed as a monk walking from Walking Street. The man then went down to the beach, changed into white clothes, placed a monk’s robe on the beach, and lay down. Mr. Preecha believed that the man was definitely not a real monk and reported it to the police to prevent any damage to Buddhism, especially since many foreign tourists had seen the incident. He urged the police to take serious action.
