At 11:55 AM, on July 2nd, 2024, Thai Minister of Justice Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong provided a public update on the car bomb incident that occurred in front of the police residential building in Bannang Sata, Yala. The explosion tragically claimed the life of a teacher at Tadika School.
Pol. Col. Thawee reported that the police investigation has not yet identified the perpetrators. However, the Commander of Provincial Police Region 9 informed him that several individuals have been detained for interrogation under the provisions of Martial Law and the Emergency Decree, which allows for up to seven days of questioning.
By the new Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act, the detained suspects are protected by strict procedures. Officers are required to record video and audio during interrogations to ensure compliance with the law. Pol. Col. Thawee emphasized that the police are fully aware of these protocols, and the investigative process will take time.
When questioned by Thai national media about the motive behind the car bomb, Pol. Col. Thawee stated that relevant agencies are currently investigating the case. He assured that accurate details will be provided during a forthcoming police press conference.
Pol. Col. Thawee concluded by acknowledging the need for sustainable solutions to the ongoing unrest in southern Thailand. He recognized the proactive efforts of the officials and expressed optimism about the positive direction of the progress being made.
