On June 12th, 2024, the Thai Constitutional Court held a weekly meeting, addressing cases regarding the alleged subversion of the government by the Move Forward Party (MFP), and a petition by 40 senators questioning the qualifications of Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin following the controversial appointment of Pichit Chuenban as Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Constitutional Court reviewed a petition from the Election Commission (EC), submitted by the political party registrar, seeking the dissolution of the MFP. The EC’s request includes banning the party’s executive committee members from running for election and prohibiting them from registering a new party for 10 years.
The court has ordered the EC to submit a list of witnesses and evidence by June 17th, 2024. To aid its consideration, the Constitutional Court’s office will conduct further research and present its findings at the next hearing scheduled for June 18th, 2024.
Meanwhile, the court examined a petition submitted by the President of the Senate, representing the views of 40 senators. They argue that Srettha’s appointment of Pichit Chuenban, who had previously been sentenced to six months in prison by the Supreme Court for contempt of court, violates constitutional standards of integrity and ethics.
The court has instructed both parties to submit their lists of witnesses and evidence by June 17th, 2024. To aid its consideration, the Constitutional Court’s office will conduct further research and present its findings at the next hearing scheduled for June 18th, 2024.
