Kanchanaburi Tourist Police Recover British Tourist’s Stolen Bag, Arrest Taxi Driver

Kanchanaburi—

On June 5th, 2024, Kanchanaburi tourist police received a report from a guesthouse manager regarding a British guest who had left his shoulder bag on a taxi’s roof. The taxi driver allegedly kept it for personal gain.

The victim, identified only as Mr. Southgate, 19, had hired a taxi from Bangkok to a guesthouse in Kanchanaburi. Upon arrival, he checked in, forgetting his shoulder bag in the taxi, which contained identification, a 50 baht banknote, and some foreign currency, on the taxi’s roof.

Mrs. Jiraporn, the guesthouse manager, last name withheld, informed the police that the taxi left after five minutes. A staff member followed the taxi and inquired about the bag, but the driver denied having it. CCTV footage revealed however that the taxi driver had indeed taken the bag from the roof, prompting Jiraporn to contact the tourist police.

At 1:25 PM, police intercepted the suspect, identified only as Mr. Prasert, 54, en route to Nakhon Pathom and found foreign banknotes in his possession. Prasert confessed to discarding the bag and spending the 50 baht inside on cigarettes.

The tourist police returned the shoulder bag to Southgate and took Prasert to Mueang Kanchanaburi police station for further legal action.
