Thailand Aims to Boost Economy with Pride Month Events, Targets LGBTQ+ Tourists

On May 26th, 2024, Thai Government spokesperson Chai Watcharong announced that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin emphasized the importance of social diversity regardless of age, sex, religion, nationality, or social status.

Thailand is as a result prepared to hold numerous Pride Month events in June 2024.

In line with Thai government policy to support equality, Thailand is gearing up to celebrate Pride Month and welcome international tourists as a Tourism Hub and Pride Friendly destination. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) aims to position Thailand as a top LGBTQ+ friendly destination, expanding tourism networks to attract global LGBTQ+ tourists.

The LGBTQ+ community represents quality tourists with high spending potential, who tend to travel frequently and stay longer than general tourists, said the TAT. According to the TAT government spokesperson, this demographic can significantly increase market opportunities and add value to Thai products and services.

LGBT Capital data indicated that in 2023, Thailand ranked 4th globally in generating the highest revenues from the LGBTQ+ community. The TAT estimates that over 860,000 individuals will participate in various Pride Month events, generating an economic impact of at least 4.5 billion baht.

TAT, in collaboration with the private sector, will host several Pride events: the Colorful Pride Festival in Chiang Mai from May 25th to June 30th, the Bangkok Pride Festival 2024 from May 31st to June 4th, and the Pride Nation Samui International Pride Festival from June 24th to 29th. Pattaya will have multiple major events on June 8th and June 22nd as well as smaller events throughout the month.

Prime Minister Srettha will also participate in the Bangkok Pride Parade 2024, underscoring his commitment to social diversity and equality. Additionally, he supports Thailand’s bid to host the World Pride event in 2030.
