Thai Amulet Dealer Arrested with Wife for Alleged Fraud of Over 380 Million Baht

National —

A famous Thai amulet dealer from Nakhon Sawan and his wife have been arrested and charged with fraud and embezzlement, after they were accused of duping a businessman out of his amulets worth over 380 million baht.

The couple, publicly identified by Nakhon Sawan police only as Mr. Thanapon and Ms. Amarat, was apprehended in Chiang Rai after months of investigation. They face charges under the Cheque Act, as well as fraud and embezzlement charges from Nakhon Sawan and Nonthaburi provincial courts.

Mr. Thanapon, a former member of the Thai Amulet Association’s appraisal committee, is accused of renting amulets worth over 380 million baht from an unidentified real estate businessman but allegedly failing to return both the amulets and the rental payments. Instead, he reportedly gave a series of bouncing checks to the businessman.

Upon their arrival at the Nakhon Sawan Police Station, the couple were confronted by the businessman in question. He demanded them return 564 amulets and 380 million baht to him. However, Mr. Thanapon reportedly only admitted to the charges but refused to discuss the return of either the amulets or the money with the victim.

Mr. Thanapon only stated that he would fight the case in court.
