The Pheu Thai Party, the second largest government coalition partner attempting to form a new government, is now taking the lead in forming Thailand’s new government instead of the Move Forward Party (MFP), the election winner, according to MFP secretary-general Chaitawat Tulathon.
“It became evident that all institutions supporting the conservative side are attempting to prevent the Move Forward Party (Which is progressive) from forming a government.” Chitawat said in yesterday’s press conference at 11:00 AM, July 21st, 2023.
Chitawat continued, “The main issue of the Move Forward Party supporting ameding the lèse-majesté law is being used to suppress the people’s choice. The Senate is using it as a reason not to vote for the candidate that won the majority of votes. The Parliament also used a parliamentary regulation in a way that contradicted the charter.”
On July 19th, the Parliament voted to disapprove the renomination of Pita Limjaroenrat, the MFP’S sole PM candidate, as a PM citing a parliamentary regulation. He was also suspended from duties by the Constitutional Court over his media shareholding case on the same day.
“However, although Pita cannot become the Prime Minister, it does not mean that the formation of the government by the current coalition will not succeed,” Chitawat added.
“The ultimate goal of the Move Forward Party remains to establish a government that will put an end to the cycle of power succession of the conservative junta-related government. Therefore, the Move Forward Party will give the opportunity to the Pheu Thai Party to lead the government, along with seven other parties.”
