Bangkok Police collaborated with South Korean law enforcement to arrest a Korean man for smuggling crystal meth from Thailand into his home country.
On May 19th, anti-drug police officers in Bangkok rounded up a foreign drug suspect, Mr. Cheon Yoon Bae of South Korean nationality, on suspicion of smuggling crystal methamphetamine from Thailand to South Korea between 2021 – 2022.
Mr. Cheon was arrested at his condominium on Soi Sukhumvit 21 within the Klongtoey Nua sub-district of Wattana district, Bangkok. The police found 0.5 gram of ice (crystal meth) in his possession.
According to Mr. Wichai Chaimongkol, Secretary-General of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), the arrest was a result of coordinated efforts between the ONCB and the Korea National Police (KNP).
The KNP informed Thai police that Mr. Cheon had been smuggling illicit drugs into South Korean since 2021, and that he was residing in Thailand.
Upon questioning him, Cheon reportedly confessed to the allegations. He claimed that he had received the drugs from a Thai woman who he met on social media some time ago. The woman reportedly gave him one gram of ice for personal consumption per one purchase. He then became her dealer and started sneaking drugs into his own country. However, he denied giving any details about the anonymous woman, according to police.
The suspect faced drug charges and is currently in custody at the Lumpinee Police Station. Police also slapped him with overstaying charges after learning that he had overstayed his visa.
