The Move Forward Party party-list future member of Parliament Ms. Nateepat Kulsetthasith, 46, resigned from the party on Tuesday (May 16th) after she was arrested in Bangkok for drunk driving.
This was only one day after being elected in the Thai election on May 14th.
Ms. Nateepat told the Thai press “Last night, May 15th, I hung out with a few friends. I drank about four glasses of alcohol. After that, I drove my car though a police checkpoint. I followed what the police asked me to do in terms of a test but I called my friends to come to me before I did the alcohol breath test to be observers. This is entirely my fault and has nothing to do with the Move Forward Party. I am very sorry for the voters who have supported me. I have to take responsibility for what I have done and resign from my position.”
Nateepat was referring to the fact that some media initially reported her as refusing the breath alcohol test, which she denies, saying she only wanted to seek some advice and call a friend as an observer before doing so, which took roughly an hour for the friend to arrive at the checkpoint. She then took the test, testing over the legal limit, and was arrested.
The deputy leader of the Move Forward Party Mr. Pijarn Chaopattanawong told the press “The Police Chief has confirmed to us that Ms. Nateepat did not tell police at the checkpoint that she was a future member of Parliament and she did not use or ask for any special exceptions. Ms. Nateepat has resigned from the party-list member of Parliament.”
The Move Forward Party will have in total 39 of party-list members of parliament after the election. As Ms. Nateepat resigned, her seat will be replaced by No. 40 of the list which is Mr. Suthep U-On. The seat remains Move Forward Party and will not be contested.
