Afternoon Thunderstorms Shake Pattaya, But No Significant Damage

Pattaya, Thailand-

Afternoon thunderstorms struck Pattaya and parts of Chonburi this afternoon, May 9th, 2023, shaking up local residents but causing no major damage.

There were some reports of minor damage at markets in Sri Racha in which a short windstorm tore apart a local market, causing tents and awnings to be thrown in the air in viral video shared by social media users, but there were no injuries.

Despite heavy lightning and thunder, Pattaya’s power grid largely managed to weather the storm, pun intended, and there were no significant reports of extended power outages.

Actual rainfall was light to medium level and as a result there was also no significant flooding.

The best thing about the storm, however, was that it helped lower boiling hot temperatures in the Pattaya area over the past several days in what has been an extended heat wave. Many residents have complained about high electric bills and sweltering heat to The Pattaya News over the past month or so.

More storms are also likely on the way this week according to the Thai Meteorological Department so Pattaya residents should prepare for inclement weather.
