Pattaya Police Scan Soi Six to Prevent Underage Workers

Pattaya —

Pattaya Police launched an impromptu inspection at Soi Six last night to prevent minors from working in or entering nightlife venues.

The officers were led by deputy police chief Pol Lt Col Surachet Aneksri who swept through Soi Six at 7:30 PM on April 6th.

Lt Col Surachet told The Pattaya News that the operation was intended to prevent individuals under the age of 18 from working in and entering entertainment venues, in order to protect them from harm.

“With schools closed for extended periods due to the Songkran festival and end of term, there may be a higher risk of underage individuals attempting to work in such establishments (bars and nightclubs),” Lt Col Surachet said. “Therefore, it is important for venues to strictly comply with laws and regulations related to underage employment.”

The deputy chief added that violators would face strict legal consequences if caught. The legal age for working in these venues is 18, although consumption and serving of alcohol is restricted for 20+.

After randomly checking venues’ employees’ IDs, it turned out that there were no underage workers, according to Lt Col Surachet. However, Pattaya Police will continue their efforts to uphold this standard.

Pattaya police in conjunction with other relevant agencies also reviewed several bars on Soi Six on the prior day, April 5th, 2023. Although detailed inspections took place including in-depth interviewing of staff and CCTV review, no minors or licensing issues were discovered, according to Surachet.

The recent inspections are in response to an effort nationwide to stamp out human trafficking, especially of minors, an effort led by top Thai Police officer Surachate Hakparn, more commonly known as Big Joke.

A recent case in Phuket that made headlines across Thailand caused police to double down on crime fighting efforts.
